Rural Community Assistance Corporation’s Loan Fund celebrates 30 years of lending

July 25, 2018 marks Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) Loan Fund’s 30th anniversary. RCAC created the Loan Fund in 1988 with an initial $1 million investment from the Ford Foundation. An additional $1 million loan (later converted to a grant) from Bank of America boosted lending capital. The Loan Fund was later certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI).

Two major housing measures before California voters in November

California voters will decide later this year on two significant housing measures that would help the state’s growing homeless population. One of those is a $2 billion bond measure, which hit a snag in 2016 after some lawmakers argued that the money was initially earmarked for mental health services; not housing.

Buying a home in California remains difficult even for well-earning residents

More than 40 years after Gov. Jerry Brown created the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA), many of the state’s families still find it difficult, if not impossible, to afford a home. The agency was and is geared toward low- and moderate-income families. According to its records, however, only 124 households earning more than $100,000 obtained a loan through CalHFA in fiscal year 2016.

More housing needed in California’s Sonoma County, but no solid plans to build

In a recent housing study, researchers say that California lawmakers need to allow for more homebuilding, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. In Sonoma County, the need for affordable housing is particularly acute but, some say, residents living in the mostly rural county are uneasy with more people moving to and living in the region.
