“Rural America at a Glance,” U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service’s annual report provides great insight into economic and social trends in rural counties. According to the Daily Yonder, it’s worth a second glance.

New study on food insecurity

The Urban Institute published a sweeping study on the numbers, and locations, of Americans lacking access to an adequate diet. The Walmart Foundation funded the study, titled “Disrupting Food Insecurity.” A key insight into its findings were that many rural regions have dramatic differences in food insecurity from region to region.

Partners for Rural Transformation release policy paper

The Partners for Rural Transformation (PRT) is a national coalition dedicated to advancing economic mobility in persistent poverty areas. Collectively, the PRT members provide financial products and services that advance quality jobs, housing, infrastructure and address other vital needs in America where the poverty rate has exceeded 20 percent for at least three consecutive decades.

Rural America faces rising suicide rates

A recent University of Ohio study raises important questions about suicide in rural communities. The study correlated suicide rates based on where victims lived. Rural areas had notably higher rates, 22 per 100,000 people, compared to 17.6 in large metropolitan areas.
