Cantua Creek and El Porvenir residents usually drive out of town and spend up to $100 monthly to purchase bottled drinking water. These western Fresno County communities, predominantly farmworkers, don’t drink the water Westlands Water District provides due to high disinfectant concentrations. Some are afraid to bathe in it, according to The Fresno Bee.
California Rural Legal Assistance applied for a grant to deliver bottled water to the residents while plans are underway to construct a new water plant.
County officials are discussing a regional approach to finance the proposed new plant. Including the two communities and possibly others in its service area would increase the number of connections and could reduce residents’ costs.
