U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a $9 million grant to the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe in Colorado for upgrades to its water and wastewater infrastructure in Towaoc and White Mesa. Rural Community Assistance Corporation provided technical assistance to the Tribe to submit the grant proposals.
Funding will go toward projects to repair and upgrade the 60-year old water and sewer systems. In Towaoc, $1.9 million will be spent to expand and upgrade the wastewater treatment facility. An additional $3.5 million will be allocated for home water meters and replacement of cast-iron piping.
In White Mesa, $1.6 million will go toward installation of a water-treatment plant and distribution system to provide safe drinking water. Additionally, $1.9 million will be spent to repair a wastewater-treatment system as well as a public works building.
