The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it will award 298 recipients throughout 44 states and Puerto Rico with business development help through the Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) program.

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan announced the funding, which is expected to create jobs while strengthening the economic foundation in rural areas across the nation. A variety of recipients will include agricultural producers, farmers and ranchers, as well as small businesses and cooperatives.

"In his State of the Union address last week President Obama was clear that we need to do more to create jobs and promote economic growth," said Merrigan. "These projects will provide financial returns and help create jobs for agricultural producers, businesses and families across the country."

She also said funding will help expand small businesses and opportunities, as they will provide economic community development through local businesses with access capital as well as technical assistance for provided services and products.

While 44 states are included in the list of recipients, quite a few are representing rural areas including one in Arizona, 17 in California, five in Hawaii three in Colorado, and others in Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
