Rural roadWhile it remains challenging today for many low-income Americans to find affordable housing, if they do it is often far from their workplace and schools.

A Fannie Mae report on affordable housing options, recently found that one in three Americans were unable to find affordable housing near their workplace. Respondents said they would prefer to live closer to work but could not afford housing there.

“When nearly six in 10 Americans have to sacrifice economic opportunities and nearly half have to sacrifice quality education and childcare because of housing affordability, it’s clear we need to bring new ideas to the marketplace,” Maria Evans, Fannie Mae’s vice president of sustainable communities, said in a statement.

The Fannie Mae report reflects in part an equally troubling finding that within 10 years, more than half of all middle-income American seniors will be unable to cover their assisted living and medical costs.
