In early March of this year, the Rural Prosperity Act was introduced by U.S. Representatives Angie Craig (D-MN) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA). This act seeks to establish a designated office that would prioritize rural prosperity issues. This office, which would be called the Office of Rural Prosperity, would then serve as a permanent fixture in the White House tasked with coordinating federal rural development programs to support rural America.

“It’s clear to me that the federal government needs to lift up rural communities and build a country where every American can benefit from our growing economy,” said Representative Angie Craig in a press statement.

If the bipartisan bill is passed, the President would appoint a Chief Rural Advisor to lead the office. A Rural Prosperity Council would also be created, consisting of heads of executive branch departments, agencies and officers serving rural communities.

The creation of the Office of Rural Prosperity would ease the process of assisting rural communities by removing bureaucratic barriers. The needs of rural communities would be put first, and funds intended for rural Americans would stay in rural communities to be utilized in ways that best serve those areas.
