Zuni Indian Reservation, N.M. – Some three decades ago Darrell Tsabetsaye opened a convenience store called Major Market on the Zuni Indian Reservation on the Arizona-northern New Mexico border. Though such stores are fixtures on many street corners, Tsabetsaye’s was neither common nor convenient to establish.

Climate change threatens a way of life in Shishmaref, Alaska
In Shismaref, Alaska, an Iñupiat village that is home to about 600 people, climate change poses more than a physical threat, it threatens the community’s culture. The village is located on Sarichef Island, about a quarter of a mile wide, near the Bering Strait. Sea ice around the island used to protect it from the ocean’s fierce waves. Permafrost created the town’s foundation. But warming temperatures mean the ice is forming later and later, and the permafrost is thawing.

Housing affordability impacts western Nevada workers
Despite its booming economy, western Nevada is having difficulty filling jobs as housing affordability declines. In the Reno-Sparks area, jobs are plentiful but the average price of a single-family home is $400,000. Rents aren’t much better, at about $1,300 per month.
