Akutan Island

City of Akutan, on the Aleutian Islands, Alaska

Problem: The city of Akutan’s water system failed to comply with the requirement to distribute its Consumer Confidence Report to customers.

Solution: RCAC staff provided technical assistance to complete and distribute the report.

The city of Akutan has a population of just more than 1,000. It is a fishing community and a traditional Unangan village.

Every year, water systems are required to submit a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) to customers with information about water quality tests, violations and any other compliance issues. The state cited the city of Akutan for failure to submit a 2019 CCR. The city then requested assistance from RCAC to prepare and distribute the CCR.

Rural Development Specialist (RDS) Evelyn Agnus worked with system staff to help them compile the necessary data, prepare the report and distribute it to customers. The city clerk now understands the CCR requirements and developed a process to prepare and disseminate the 2020 CCR on time. This brought the city into compliance with regulations, which ensures that the system has tools to provide access to information for its customers.
