Location: Anahola Census Designated Place (CDP), Kauai County, Hawaii

Problem:  Rural communities need to create jobs and economic opportunities

Solution: Rural Community Assistance Corporation’s (RCAC) Loan Fund provides a $25,700 small business loan to expand a camping facility on Kauai

In 2009, native Hawaiians eligible for trust land allotments under the Hawaiian Homes Act established the Homestead Community Development Corporation. The corporation has undertaken several community development projects in the homestead region of Anahola, on the northeast corner of Hawaii. Projects include affordable housing and an open air marketplace.

In 2015, the Corporation opened Kumu Camp, a campground site built and constructed with volunteers. The campground has 10 tentalows (canvas structures), two yurts and 18 campsites, and two indoor bathrooms. In the ensuing years, demand for campsites has grown steadily, and there are only two other privately owned campgrounds on the island.

RCAC’s Loan fund provided a $25,700 small business loan so the corporation can add four tentalows, one yurt and 10 additional campsites. This is expected to increase revenue significantly and retain one full-time and three part-time jobs for this already profitable business venture.
