Glass of drinking waterDemocratic presidential candidates have come out with plans to ensure all Americans have access to clean water, among them is California Sen. Kamala Harris who recently focused on water crises around the country.

Harris is proposing a “Water Justice Act,” which would invest nearly $220 billion in clean and safe drinking water programs, in particular for high-risk communities and schools. The legislation would also institute a $10 billion program to allow states to offset the water bills in low-income communities and environmentally at-risk households.

An additional $20 billion would address sustainable water supply, recycling and conservation programs.

Other democratic lawmakers are also focusing on clean water, including former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, who has proposed a plan to fight lead exposure in water, and Sens. Bernie Sanders and Cory Booker who have visited communities struggling to treat tainted water.
