After hitting urban areas particularly hard in the spring, COVID-19 seems to be making its long-feared arrival into rural America. Outbreaks in California’s Central Valley are being closely monitored by government officials as high up as the White House Coronavirus task force.

During a recent briefing Dr. Debra Birx, White House Coronavirus task force coordinator, included the region as a hotspot.

While it’s not clear which counties Birx was specifically referring to, the CDC tracking data per county currently places Kern, Fresno, San Joaquin and Stanislaus at high risk levels. Kern County in particular has the third highest number of cases per 100,000 in the state, exceeding even Los Angeles County.
